National Silent Witness Initiative
Silent Witness is a not-for-profit grassroots organization founded in 1990 in Minnesota. A group of artists and writers who were upset about the growing number of women being murdered by their partners or acquaintances, joined together with several other women's organizations to form Arts Action Against Domestic Violence. They felt an urgency to do something that would speak out against the escalating domestic violence in their state, something that would commemorate the lives of women who had been lost in 1990 as a result of domestic violence They created 27 life-sized red wooden figures representing all the women who were killed in acts of domestic violence in Minnesota in 1990. They called them the Silent Witnesses.

In just ten years, Silent Witness became an international initiative with efforts in all 50 states and several countries. More information about the Silent Witness National Initiative can be found on their web site at www.silentwitness.net.
